Ever since this service became more widespread in the United States, many uncertainties surrounding how legal your window tinting IS have floated around. First, let’s explore a little about Visible Light Transmission (VLT). VLT is the amount of natural light that a certain shade of window tinting allows to pass through. In the state of New York, smaller vehicles require that a windshield strip, front windows, and rear windows must allow for up to 70% VLT. The rear windshield of smaller vehicles can be as dark as one desires.

For larger vehicles driven in both Queens and the surrounding areas, only the windshield strip and front windows have that requirement of 70% VLT, while rear windows and the rear windshield of vans, trucks, and SUVs can be any darkness you desire. No matter the size of your vehicle, mirrored or metallic appearances are not allowed with regard to window tinting.
